What is a Percussionist?

Simply put, a percussionist is a musician who plays percussion instruments – any object that makes a sound when hit or shaken. Many percussionists play as part of a band or an orchestra, and are important for keeping the beat. Drummers are the most common percussionists, but many people who play percussion play a wide variety of instruments such as xylophones, bells and the triangle.
Percussion instruments are often used in plays to underline or heighten mood, punctuate and drive the action forward, or provide a counterpoint or commentary on the action. Percussionists or musicians work closely with the director, the cast and also the sound design team who produce sound effects. As with a film, the music may be written separately and brought together with the action of a play, or developed during the course of rehearsal to match the action.
