What is a Fight Arranger?

The role of the fight arranger, or fight director, is to coach the actors in how to appear to fight convincingly. It is about acting and stagecraft, not, as you might suppose, about fighting and conflict. It means choreographing the actors’ moves so that no one gets hurt, although it may look as if they have been. The essence is to find the moves that are appropriate for each individual production and what the director imagines for the fight. This means that the fight arranger works closely with the director, the choreographer and the acting company. Sometimes it can mean working up a fight routine from scratch; as often it will be about adding the drama of a fight to a scene that’s already been worked on. So the fight arranger can be called in several times during a production at different times to improve and polish the fight as each scene develops.
