What is a Wardrobe Supervisor?

A wardrobe supervisor is a senior member of the wardrobe department, and usually implements the designer's costume designs. The wardrobe supervisor will understand what the costume designer has in mind for each character and will work with the other members of the department to buy, hire or create the costumes. Wardrobe supervisors are needed not only in theatre, but also in film and television.
A big part of the wardrobe supervisor's role involves allocating tasks to different members of the department and overseeing that costumes get made properly and on time. There is a huge amount of organizing to be done to prepare for a production, such as taking inventory of all the costumes needed, preparing a schedule for when different costumes will be ready and taking measurements and clothes sizes for each actor.
Once performances start, the wardrobe department is still busy. Costumes often have to be laundered between performances, and there are always repairs and alterations to be made.
