I Want To Be A Costume Designer

Good costume design takes creativity and imagination combined with the ability to manage a budget and the interpersonal skills needed to liaise with other key people in a production, most importantly the director and the set designer. It can mean long hours and hard work. A passion for and knowledge of theatre don’t hurt either. The best route into becoming a costume designer is to study art and design in school, and then to take a course in Art, Design, Fashion, Costume or Theatre Design at College or University. Within the theatre you will tend to start out as a wardrobe assistant or costume design assistant, and work your way up.
