I Want To Be A Director

I Want To Be A Director

To make it as a director you'll need experience, dedication, enthusiasm and skill. Make sure you see a wide range of theatre productions and try to talk to the people creating the work. You might start directing with a youth theatre or student drama society and move on to directing fringe shows. You'll have to be a good communicator and will have to learn to persuade people of your vision and encourage them to take risks. It's not all about being visionary, though - you'll need practical skills too: understanding budgets, technical issues and, above all, people.

Most of your training as a director will be on the job. You might get work as an assistant director but you should also take the initiative in finding short courses and workshop programmes. You'll probably have a degree but it needn't be in drama or theatre studies. Moving on to larger productions means building a reputation and getting people to see your shows. Once you're established on stage you may have opportunities to use your directing talents in film and television.
