Nicholas's Career Nicholas Hytner’s first theatre productions after leaving Cambridge University were at the Northcott Theatre in Exeter and at the Leeds Playhouse. He then moved back to his home town of Manchester as Associate Director of the Royal Exchange Theatre. He has directed The Tempest and King Lear for the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Wind in the Willows and The Madness of George III for the National Theatre and many plays in London’s West End and on Broadway including Sweet Smell of Success and the musical Miss Saigon. His first film, The Madness of King George, adapted from the play, was released in 1994 and was nominated for four Oscars. Nicholas has also directed operas in London, Glyndbourne, Paris, Geneva and Munich. He has received many awards and was Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre at Oxford University in 2000-01. In 2003 he became Director of the National Theatre and directed Henry V as part of his initial season as well as bringing in the hugely successful Jerry Springer – The Opera . |  | |
