I Want To Be A Percussionist

As with most creative careers, you may face a lot of rejection before you become successful, so you really have to believe in what you’re doing and be persistent. There is no set path to follow if you like to make music and want to make a career out of it. Many people who have careers like Terje are self-taught: they have an idea and experiment with it. The qualities you need are creativity and a sense of rhythm, but beyond that, there is just a lot of practising involved.

A good place to start is to take music, drumming or percussion classes. You can find classes at a local college or community centre or ask your music teacher at school for suggestions. Try to find people with similar musical interests to practice with, or a band that wants some innovative percussion. Once you are good enough you should try to give some live performances, and to get an agent who will represent you and help you find work.
