Paule Constable - Lighting Designer Lighting is what Paule Constable calls ‘the secret language of theatre’. At its most basic her job is to decide what lights go where and when to turn them on and off. But for her it involves far more than that: her key tasks are to create the atmosphere that will convey what the text is saying, and to find the best way of communicating it to an audience scene by scene. Paule was excited by the idea of ‘doing something about darkness’ in His Dark Materials . It has meant using light to create such stunning effects as the Aurora Borealis and the Land of the Dead. She’s learned to delegate to her 20-strong team because otherwise the sheer scale of rigging and focusing and planning how to use hundreds of different lights placed at dozens of places around and above the Olivier stage would simply be overwhelming. | | |
