Giles Cadle - Set Designer Giles Cadle had worked with Nicholas Hytner on Mother Clap’s Molly House before the director offered him the chance to work on His Dark Materials . Giles was immediately drawn to its epic scale. It’s also been his biggest headache, involving 55 separate locations. For him it’s been a challenge to achieve a show that never stops and remains constantly interesting. His work began with the first workshops over a year before the plays opened. Although the trilogy is a fantasy he has had plenty of reference materials to work with: the real Oxford locations, the real Svalbard, and the books themselves. His aim has been to create a different look and feel for each of the worlds within the plays. He describes stage design as being more about creating a psychological space than creating beautiful imagery. His ambition is to connect with the audience in a way that’s not obvious. | | |
