Paul Groothuis - Sound Designer Like many people in theatre Paul didn’t start out in life planning to be in his present position. He grew up with the ambition to become a TV cameraman, found a job as a technical instrument maker, but discovered it didn’t offer him enough contact with people. He describes himself as a technician who supports an artist. ‘I enjoy supporting the creative process’, he says. In His Dark Materials he faces a huge challenge trying to find the right sounds for a host of strange creatures and monsters. His approach is unusual. He asks the actors what they imagine their character or daemon would sound like, and takes it from there. He works closely with the Director and other members of the creative and technical teams. For him the most important qualities in a good Sound Designer are the ability to communicate well, to be open-minded and a team player. | | |
