His Dark Materials Guidance Notes

Stagework is a rich resource for teachers and learners of all ages. Here are some suggestions for how to get the most out of Stagework for learning.

We have dedicated lesson ideas for KS 3 & 4 Citizenship and English and Drama but teachers of younger pupils, and those at post-16 will find the site useful too.

The Productions section gives insights into the rehearsal and production process which will interest students of Drama and Performing Arts as will the Rehearsal Diary. You can also find out how Nicholas Hytner, who directed His Dark Materials but is also Director of the National Theatre, approaches his role in Events and Workshops.

For those studying various aspects of design and fashion there are interviews and examples of the work of the set designer, Giles Cadle and costume designer Jon Morrell in the relevant sections in Productions. And you can learn about how to create puppets in Daemons.

Teachers and students of Religious Education will find the discussion of Philip Pullman’s views on the church in Faith Hope & Blasphemy in Issues of interest.

The site will also be useful to teachers of ICT looking for examples of rich media materials.

For any young person interested in a career in theatre, on stage or backstage, or in the creative industries as a whole, there is an opportunity to learn more from the horse’s mouth in People.
